After banging my head against a brick wall talking about this very topic for about 15 years, I was pleased to see a recent post by Christine Williamson about glazing ratios.
Yes, a window can let some nice winter solar warmth in, but the window is also a very poor insulator compared to a wall, so does the solar gain compensate for the heat loss with a high glazing ratio? My answer, despite much pushback, has always been, no.
Here’s a link to Christine’s article with an excellent explanation of the glazing ratio drawing on the expertise of John Straube and his book on high performance enclosures.
